Why Is George Zimmerman Still A Free Man?

Gerechtigkeit (german) – justice

I’m sure most of you have heard the name Trayvon Martin by now. He’s a 17 year old kid from Florida, who was shot and killed a few weeks ago by a self-proclaimed neighborhood watch dude named George Zimmerman. Zimmerman claims he acted in self-defense. Considering that he is about 80 lbs heavier than Martin, I find that hard to believe. Also, Zimmerman is the one who had a gun. Martin had Skittles and a can of iced tea. Scary, right?

I listened to a few 911 calls. One of them came from Zimmerman, complaining to the police that Martin looked suspicious. He was “walking around, looking about”. That kid sounds really scary.

There are a few other things that bother me about this story. Zimmerman was not arrested or charged with anything after it happened. He also was not screened for drugs or alcohol, which is supposed to be a standard procedure in homicides.

How is it possible that a grown man seems to be getting away after killing a teenager? Finally, weeks later, the FBI got involved after the local law enforcement obviously wasn’t able to figure things out.

I cried when I listened to the other 911 calls from people in the neighborhood who heard Martin scream for help.

Something seems to be very fishy here though. Apparently a witness told police that she heard Martin scream for help. The officer corrected her and said it was Zimmerman. I guess to prove that he was acting in self-defense. But really, what can a teenager armed with Skittles do to a man armed with a 9mm handgun?

The police had Trayvon Martin’s body for several days before contacting the family. His phone was on him. Why did they not contact the family sooner?

So many things in this case do not add up.

Martin has no criminal record.

Zimmerman (according to the Huffington Post)  “was charged in July 2005 with resisting arrest with violence and battery on an officer. The charges appear to have been dropped.”

The Miami Herald reports that since January 1, 2011, Zimmerman has called police 46 times. Neighbors report that he is “fixated on crime and focused on young, black males.”

Thinkprogress.org has a whole list of things that seem to be wrong with this case.

Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! did an interesting piece on this.

Here is a petition you can sign to demand justice for Trayvon Martin.

I can’t even begin to express how I feel about this story. It makes me angry and sad that things like this happen. I don’t understand why George Zimmerman has not been charged with anything yet. And I can only hope that this will be figured out soon, so that there will be justice for Trayvon Martin and his family.

The kid did nothing wrong. There have been reports that he was on the phone with a friend right before he was shot. He knew that Zimmerman was following him. His friend told him he should run, but he said he was just going to walk faster. He knew that he wasn’t doing anything wrong.

The only person who did something wrong is George Zimmerman. Let’s hope he will go to jail for it soon.

RIP Trayvon Martin.

Have you heard about this? How do you feel about the case?
